New Project – Evaluation of the Drinking Water Quality of Thessaly, Greece!

Following the devastating floods that struck Thessaly, this new project focuses on monitoring the water quality in the region. The endeavor is supported by the Ministry of Environment & Energy, including the Natural Environment & Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A).

Understanding Microbes:  Μicrobes can adapt to environmental conditions in every water system worldwide, making disinfection challenging. As they grow, they form biofilms and become highly resistant to disinfectants and antibiotics. Our project aims to explore the overall microbial community across various regions of Thessaly.

Metagenomics Approach: Our cutting-edge technology in DNA sequencing combining our experience in the detection of microorganisms, gives us the ability to identify a huge range of different microbial species, greatly surpassing the standard microbiological testing of drinking water. In addition, our custom-built bioinformatics platform offers additional advantages, such as detecting the presence of genes that are associated with virulence and antibiotic resistance.
